Device questions

Hey all, I'm trying to get a couple more devices for my farm, having some issues.

I picked up an LG zone 3 from Wal-Mart, but not a single root app would work with Android 5.1.1 according to what I could find...ran the phone for 2 days and made 7 cents.

Wondering if this is because I couldn't install all of the apps that require root?

I'm trying to decide between:

A) downgrading the os and trying the root apps,
B) returning the phone and picking up an older version and trying
C) returning the phone and trying a different device altogether (Moto g)

What does it mean to root a phone? And why is rooting needed?

I got a $9 tracphone that's running smoothly lol

Still can't make diddly squat with checkpoints, but other apps are doing decent

No it's not rooted. I'm waiting on someone to make a video on rooting so I can get a better understanding as to what it means to root and why.
