How exactly is a VPN set up on a router?

I have looked online and the instructions are conflicting or unclear.

A link to a guide or a list of instruction would be a great help.

Note: I'm kind of technology illiterate, so please very clear instructions.

It depends what VPN software/protocol your router uses in a general sense.

We still can't really help unless if we know what router you have. It is different for each router.
