Do I need an access point?

georgio2080 » Wed Mar 15, 2017 5:41 am

Could anyone tell me when you need to look into an access point? I have about 27 phones and I notice that now and then a few of them will lose connection to wifi. Thank you for any info.

I have heard that you dont really need to worry about access points until you hit 30-40 phones. I have also heard that you want to only have 20 phones on your modem and then after 20 look into access points. Not sure what to think.

I have an ASUS RT-N66U router. It is a pretty good one.

I had problems with Comcast Modem / Router when it hit about 25 devices so I went out and got a NightHawk router made a huge Difference.
Look into getting a router that has a Good Processer and maybe even some co-processers to handle all of the data Flow. I will most likely need to get another one after about 10 more devices. Remember each AP can only hand out data to one device at a time on each band so dual or tri band is better if you have devices that can opperate on the 5 GHz Band.

I have about 30 devices in the house that use the internet but only about 25 for making money.

I thought access points could handle roughly 20 devices?

Depends on the AP hardware I use the AP to handle all my 5 GHz devices and some 2.4 GHz devices that are far away and use the Comcast Modem / Router to handle most of the 2.4 GHz devices that close by. If you a buy a cheap Router it might not handle 20 devices well.
Personaly I want everything running as fast as it can and no lag or buffering so that i can make the most money per hour because in the end that's what its all about.
