Do I need to "unlock" it to "root" it?
I try to root it, but it stays at 90% then it resets my phone and it's still not rooted. It says I should wait until it's 50% charged. It isn't yet. I'm using KINGOROOT. I have that for my other phone and it's fine. I'm so confused! My other phone is also at 4.4.2 but it's an lg tribute.
What should I do?

On the E's you have to unlock the bootloader, at least on the 3 I have you do. Mine are not eligible for this therefore I cannot root at all. Google it and you should directions on how to determine if you can or not.

i just decided to use it for perk and app trailers with cleaning the cache every hour or so. i do enjoy this phone and it never freezes or powers off. what really is the point to rooting anyway?
i have a rooted lg tribute and a jailbroken iphone 4, buts thats it.
